New Research Themes Selected

Four new themes have been selected by Netspar for the period of October 2009 till October 2012. One of the themes is of American origin, lead by Annamaria Lusardi (Dartmouth College, US). Her research is on financial literacy. The other three research projects are affiliated with Dutch university partners. At the VU University Amsterdam, Maarten Lindeboom is in charge of a project to investigate the relations between health, income and retirement. Peter Schotman (Maastricht University) studies the valuation of pensions and desired investment policy. Tension between short term risks and long term policy of pension funds is investigated by Michel Vellekoop (University of Amsterdam). More information

Call for Papers Pension Workshop

Netspar's research coordinators Ben Heijdra, Monika Bütler and Marno Verbeek invite all researchers to submit their papers and presentations for the Pension Workshop before November 1, 2009. Mike Orszag (Watson Wyatt Partners) and Laurence Kotlikoff (Boston University) are the two keynote speakers at this workshop. More information can be found here.

Working Group Decumulation Pension Rights

Four Netspar researchers are occupied with writing a NEA paper on decumulation of pension rights. The Netspar partners have been asked for input on e.g. annuities and periodicity of pension payments. For more information, check the Dutch edition.

Presentations Using LaTeX

Many of the researchers involved in Netspar make their presentations in LaTex using powerdot. Netspar offers now a free zip file with a Netspar template for their convenience.

Twenty Students for Netspar MSc

This year Netspar's master Economics and Finance of Aging has started off with twenty students, double the amount of last year.

Upcoming Event: Pension Day

The Netspar Pension Day will be held on November 13, 2009. The program contains papers from all main Netspar streams: Finance, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. The aim of this Pension Day is to encourage cross-fertilisation between the different Netspar streams and to encourage open discussion and intellectual exchange between Netspar's junior and senior research fellows. More information on the program and registration.

Upcoming Event: Longevity Risk

On December 2, 2009, Netspar organizes a theme event on longevity risk. Improvements in life expectancy are putting more and more pressure on governments, pension funds, life insurance companies as well as individuals to deal with the longevity risk they face. The goal of this event is to bring together academics and practitioners to discuss the current "state of the art" with regard to quantifying and managing longevity risk. More information on the program and registration.

Upcoming Event: Online Decision Support

In recent years, the range of available pension and related income provision products has expanded significantly. The question arises whether consumers are capable to act on this potential welfare gain because of the high complexity of the decisions that they face. The objective of this conference is to present recent research on interactive decision aids and website design and to discuss the suitability of various approaches to supporting consumer pension decision making online. More information on the program and registration.
